Collective Member
Brandy J Sebastian is a California based, award-winning fine art photographer and visual storyteller whose work explores perception, spirituality, and lived experience. Working across digital, analog, and alternative photographic processes, her practice moves beyond literal representation to evoke the emotional and energetic qualities that shape how one experiences and interprets the world.
Sebastian’s photographs invite the viewer to take pause and reflect, often engaging themes of transformation, intention, and connection. Her work has been exhibited in solo, group, and juried exhibitions throughout the United States, both in physical gallery spaces and online platforms, and is held in private collections nationwide. With a practice grounded in both technical rigor and intuitive exploration, her images encourage engagement with what is felt as much as what is seen.
Deeply committed to photographic community and education, Sebastian recently earned her undergraduate degree in Digital Photography from Southern New Hampshire University. She is a founding member of The Photographer’s Eye Collective, co-founder and leader of True North Photo Society, and an active member of the Medium Collective at Medium Photo. Through these organizations, she supports collaborative exhibitions, community-based photography events, and educational programming. In addition to exhibiting her work, Sebastian teaches workshops in camera-less alternative photographic processes through the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, Oasis Senior Centers, The Photographer’s Eye Collective, and her own artist studio. She also teaches image finishing, combining technical instruction with conceptual approaches to photographic practices. Recently, she expanded her creative services to include website design and maintenance for local artists over the age of 70, providing personalized support by working directly with them in their homes and studios.
Through her photography and teaching, Brandy J. Sebastian continues to foster dialogue around photography’s ability to illuminate personal and collective narratives, inviting viewers to experience the world with greater awareness and curiosity.
Photography is both my creative practice and my way of understanding the world. Through experimentation with traditional, digital, and alternative photographic processes, I explore the intersections of light, spirituality, memory, transformation, and the human experience. Whether working with landscapes, still lifes, cameraless imagery, composites, or sculptural forms, I am drawn to the possibilities that emerge when curiosity, intuition, and process guide creation.
Light serves as both subject and metaphor throughout my work. It reveals, conceals, transforms, and connects, acting as a visual language through which I explore joy, wonder, resilience, and the unseen relationships between ourselves and the natural world. My imagery often inhabits a space between reality and imagination, where symbolism, mythology, memory, and personal narrative converge.
Living with chronic illness has profoundly shaped my perspective and artistic practice. Photography has become a tool for navigating uncertainty, processing emotional and physical challenges, and finding balance within continual change. Through creation, I seek moments of healing, acceptance, and renewal while embracing imperfection, experimentation, and the unexpected.
As a woman, I am particularly interested in themes of identity, vulnerability, strength, and connection. Whether exploring the sacred qualities of nature, the symbolic language of animal totems, the complexities of the body, or the meditative act of making, my work reflects a deep desire to understand what it means to be fully present and engaged with life.
Ultimately, my photographs invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and enter a space of contemplation where light, spirit, and experience intertwine, revealing beauty, meaning, and possibility in both the extraordinary and the everyday.
