Collective Member
Member of The Photographer's Eye Collective, Jodie Hulden is a dedicated photographic artist exploring themes of light, shadow, and land. She has a degree in art from San Diego State University and discovered her passion for black and white photography in the 1970’s, influenced by Ansel Adams, Minor White and Walker Evans. In 2017 she completed a month-long artist-in-residency at Zion National Park. She was an award winner in 2018 at the Center Choice Awards in Santa Fe, NM. In 2019 she published a book with Dark Spring Press showcasing her interior Bodie images titled "Left Behind". She recently received a first-place award in landscape photography at the 12th Fine Art Photography Awards for her "Corners of Silence" portfolio of Yosemite Valley. She has exhibited her work nationally at the Center for Photography Arts in Carmel, the Center of Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Photo Place Gallery in Vermont, the Yosemite Renaissance Exhibitions and the Photographer’s Eye Gallery in Escondido. Internationally she was an award winner in 2022 from the 7th Biennial of Fine Art Photography in Barcelona for her work Hidden Places. She has been featured in On Landscape Magazine, Foto Relevance, Black and White Magazine (UK) and BETA: Developments in Photography Magazine.
I am a fine art, contemplative photographer whose photography focuses on the poetry of intimate spaces, both wild and man-made. My work has been strongly influenced by Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Chinese landscape paintings, Chinese poetry and Japanese Haiku. My landscapes explore what I experience as a deep connection with certain landscapes and an intimate sense of place. I am always delving into the dichotomy of beauty and loss, since beauty is fleeting and its loss is implied.
