Collective Member
Originally from the east coast, Tom became interested in photography became in his late thirties after moving to San Diego. He pursued photography as a hobby taking classes at various San Diego area community colleges (San Diego City, Grossmont, and Palomar) in both film and digital. In addition, he has taken photography workshops from Michael Frye, Bruce Barnbaum, and John Paul Caponigro. Recently, he started exploring alternative processes including platinum/palladium printing using digital negatives and cyanotypes using rain to make patterns. His film and digital prints have been in the San Diego County Fair International Photography Exhibition and the Center for Photographic Arts Members Juried Show. Additionally, his alternative process work has been in “(s)Light of Hand” – a juried alternative process exhibition at the Photographer’s Eye Collective multiple times. In 2020, one of his photographs was selected for the Lenswork book, Our Magnificent Planet. Tom retired in December 2017 and now devotes more time to his passion for photography. He specializes in black and white photographs including landscapes, cityscapes/architecture, and still life subjects.
I am predominantly a black and white landscape photographer, though I also photograph still life and cityscape/architecture subjects. My interest in photography initially started as a need to do something creative as a means to balance my work life. It also coincided with a desire to be out in nature. To see not just our national and state parks, but other areas that development has not stripped away the beauty of the natural environment. Currently, that desire to be out in nature is a way to find balance amidst our country’s political divide and escape the news. There is something soothing about our natural environment. To feel what native Americans called the Great Spirit. To see beauty in a tree, flower, rock formation, ice, rain, even something man made and capture that beauty in a photograph.
